Conversations about intimacy and sexuality can be shaped by more than professional knowledge. Our own experiences, assumptions, implicit biases, language, values, and comfort (or discomfort) with these subjects can influence what we ask, what we avoid, and how we respond as well as the quality of care a patient receives.
Start With Self is an experiential professional training that gives participants a structured opportunity to explore these influences and develop greater awareness, comfort and compassion in patient interactions.
What the training explores
Participants are guided through reflection and discussion around:
- Personal comfort with intimacy, sexuality, and other related topics
- Assumptions, limiting beliefs, biases, etc that can influence interactions
- Language and topics that may feel easier or harder to discuss and ways to develop more comfort
- How personal responses can affect what patients experience
- Ways to approach a wider range of patient experiences with greater awareness, sensitivty, and inclusivity
The training is reflective rather than clinical and does not require participants to disclose personal information.
Who is it for?
Start With Self is designed for healthcare professionals, supportive care teams, patient-facing staff, educators, facilitators, and others working with people affected by cancer.
It can stand alone or complement CancerEVOLVE’s Basic Staff Training.
