Cancer can affect far more than physical health.
It can change how people experience their bodies, sexuality, relationships, identity, and connection with themselves and others. These concerns are common, yet support for them remains inconsistent across cancer care.
Intimacy-informed care recognizes these experiences as part of whole-person care and creates consistent ways to acknowledge, discuss, and support them.
This orientation introduces what intimacy-informed care can look like in practice and how organizations can begin integrating it into everyday care.

Intimacy-informed cancer care does not mean turning every healthcare professional into a sexual health specialist.
It means creating an environment in which intimacy-related changes can be acknowledged without embarrassment or assumption, patients are given appropriate opportunities to raise concerns, staff know how to respond within the boundaries of their roles, trustworthy resources are available, and clear pathways and referrals exist when additional support is needed.
What do we mean by intimacy-informed care?
A practical framework for understanding the bigger picture
During the orientation, you’ll be introduced to the CancerEVOLVE Framework, a systems-based model for understanding how intimacy-informed care can become part of everyday care in organizations.
The framework looks at six foundational organizational domains:
Culture · Conversations · Capability · Pathways · Resources · Integration
It also considers five progressive levels of care:
Visibility & Normalization · Routine Inquiry · Guided Support · Targeted Intervention · Specialist Care
Together, these dimensions provide a practical way to see what an organization may already be doing well, where support is getting lost or disconnected, and where realistic opportunities for improvement may exist.
During this orientation, we’ll explore together:
- What intimacy-informed cancer care means and why it matters
- Why intimacy-related concerns can be difficult for patients and professionals to raise
- What different levels of support can look like, from first-line response to specialist care
- What helps organizations provide this support more consistently
- How the CancerEVOLVE Framework can help identify strengths, gaps, and practical next steps
You’ll also have an opportunity to consider what intimacy-informed care could look like in your own organization or professional setting.
This session is for professionals and organizations working within or alongside cancer care who want to better support intimacy and relational wellbeing.
No previous training in sexual health or intimacy care is required, and colleagues and team members are welcome.
